These terms apply to Tono Translate, the iPhone app and its extensions, and to this website. Tono Translate is made by Howard Daein Kim (“we”). The short version: the answers are written by AI and can be wrong, so check anything that matters; Tono Translate Pro renews until you cancel it in your Apple account; and please use the app fairly.
These terms and Apple’s
Your license to use the app comes from Apple’s Licensed Application End User License Agreement (the Standard EULA). These terms add to it. Where the two disagree about your license, the Standard EULA applies. By using Tono Translate you agree to both, and to our Privacy Policy, which explains what happens to what you submit.
Answers can be wrong
Translations, explanations, corrections, scripts, lessons and suggested replies are written by an AI model (currently Google’s Gemini), or by Apple’s on-device translation when you’re offline or choose to translate on your device. They can be wrong, incomplete, or wrong for the situation, including the level of formality they suggest. What a photo says is read by software and can be misread.
- Check anything important with someone who speaks the language.
- Don’t rely on Tono Translate for medical, legal, financial or safety decisions, such as a medicine label or dose, an allergy, a contract, or an emergency.
- Tono Translate is a learning and everyday translation tool. It is not a substitute for a professional interpreter or translator.
Tono Translate Pro
Tono Translate Pro is an auto-renewing subscription, sold and billed by Apple. The price, the billing period and any free trial are shown on the purchase screen before you buy, and Apple’s purchase sheet confirms them.
- Free trial. If your plan includes a free trial, it becomes a paid subscription when the trial ends, and Apple charges the full price of the plan you chose (for a yearly plan, the whole year) unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends. If you buy a subscription during a trial, any unused part of the trial ends.
- Renewal. After that, the subscription renews for the same period at the current price until you cancel. Apple charges your account within the 24 hours before each renewal.
- Canceling. Cancel anytime in Settings › your name › Subscriptions on your iPhone, at least 24 hours before the next charge. You keep Pro until the end of the period you’ve paid for.
- Refunds are handled by Apple, at reportaproblem.apple.com.
- Fair use. After an exceptional amount of translating in a month, the app answers on your device until the next month.
Without a subscription, each device gets a small number of free full translations, unlimited on-device translation, and Talk. We may change what is free or included in Pro. Changes to a subscription’s price follow Apple’s rules, including notice and, where required, your consent.
Using the app fairly
Please don’t use Tono Translate to:
- break the law, or harass, threaten or deceive anyone;
- transcribe or translate other people’s speech where the law requires their consent and you don’t have it (please tell people when you’re using it in a conversation);
- get around the free allowance or usage limits, reach our servers other than through the app, or send automated or bulk requests;
- copy, resell or reverse engineer the service, except where the law allows it.
We may limit or stop access for anyone who does.
Your content
What you type, say or photograph stays yours, and so do the answers you get. You let us send it to the providers named in the Privacy Policy, only to produce your answer. Please submit only what you have the right to share.
Our content
The app, its design, its mascots, this website and the guides on it belong to us. You may use the app and its answers for your own, personal use.
No guarantee, and limits on liability
To the extent the law allows, Tono Translate is provided as it is, without promises that it will be accurate, uninterrupted or fit for a particular purpose, and we are not responsible for losses that come from relying on an answer. Where the law allows us to limit our liability, it is limited to what you paid for Tono Translate Pro in the 12 months before the claim. Nothing in these terms takes away rights you have under the consumer law of your country that cannot be excluded.
Changes
We may change the app, stop offering a feature, or update these terms. If we change them materially, we’ll say so in the app. Continuing to use Tono Translate after a change means you accept it.
